For Andrew Burks, the 55th annual International Finals Rodeo (IFR) was not only an opportunity to add to his impressive career résumé but also a chance to etch his name into IFR history. The Mississippi native entered IFR55 in the driver's seat of the calf roping race and proved his dominance throughout the event, ultimately earning the coveted 2024 International Professional Rodeo Association (IPRA) World Champion Tie-Down Roper title.
Earning his first world title, Burks entered the event with a commanding lead and capitalized on his momentum with an impressive Round 1 win. This victory not only widened his season-long lead but also contributed to his already lucrative season earnings.
Burks, who now calls Alabama home, reflected on the sentimental victory.
“The success I’ve found this season is so special. In rodeo, you have highs and lows, and the losses make the wins that much more meaningful. This win means a lot to me. It’s always special to compete at the Lazy E Arena and for increased payouts.”
The calf roper, no stranger to the winner’s circle, also credited his wife for her support and the opportunity to earn this title on her horse.
“The horse I rode this season is actually my wife’s horse, which makes it really special to win on her horse. My wife is one of my biggest supporters and always pushes me to chase my goals.”
Kicking off IFR55 with a round win, the 27-year-old cowboy focused his energy on the present rather than the year-end title on the line.
“You have to try to stay calm and focus on what you’ve practiced. You really have to meditate on the task at hand and make it work. It’s a great feeling when all your hard work pays off and it goes your way.”
Burks, who primarily competed in the IPRA’s Southeastern region during the regular season, admitted the world title wasn’t initially on his mind when he began his 2024 campaign.
“The championship wasn’t my initial goal, but as the season progressed, things continued to go well and work out,” Burks explained.
Expressing his gratitude, Burks reflected on his successful season and IFR performance, which culminated in earning the 2024 IPRA World Champion Tie-Down Roper title.
“It was such a great week in Guthrie. It is really special to earn this title and to have had all the success I’ve had this season.”
